Adding Generic Assets

To extend support for legacy measuring machine models and visualize the route history of a 3rd party device that is in transit or for remote diagnosis, SFx Asset Management introduces Generic Asset.

A generic asset refers to a portable measuring instrument or a device that is not currently supported by SFx Asset Management, for instance, Leica Absolute Tracker AT403. A Generic Asset allows for remote asset positioning, route history tracking, geofence creation and event notifications, and basic asset management such as certification management after linking to a GPS Tag.

A generic asset is essentially a digital object and acts as a traceable target in SFx Asset Management. Unlike a compatible asset onboarded via SFx Desktop, you cannot get the real-time asset status, utilization, OEE, or other production metrics of a generic asset. See Browsing a Generic Asset in Detail for details.

Before adding a generic asset, ensure that you have a GPS Tag on hand. If not, you can purchase one from the Hexagon e-Store:

For how to activate a GPS Tag, see Linking a GPS Tag to an Asset for more information.

  1. Log into the SFx Asset Management Portal with your Asset Administrator account.

  2. At the top right of the header, next to the Help icon, click on the Settings (AssetSettings_Icon.PNG) icon above the user profile.

  3. On the Asset Settings page, click on the fourth tab to open the Add Generic Asset page.

  4. Click + Add Generic Asset in the upper right corner of the page.

  5. In the pop-up dialog, click Start Onboarding My Generic Asset.

To skip this step next time, mark the Don't remind me next time in the bottom-left corner.

  6. Type the serial number (SN) printed on the GPS Tag into the input box, and click Next.

A valid serial number contains 13 numeric digits.

  7. In the Asset Basic Info dialog, specify the basic properties of your asset.

    • Asset Type: The type of the asset. Click to open the drop-down list, and select one that best fits your asset. If your asset is not a Laser Tracker or portable Arm, then select Others.

    • Asset Name: Type a name to identify your asset.

    • Serial Number: Type the serial number of your asset.

The three fields listed above are required. The others are optional.

  8. Click Save.

A success message pops up. You can find your newly created asset in the generic asset list, and also in the Asset Dashboard.

  • The battery icon indicates the battery level of the GPS Tag. Hover over it to read the accurate value.

  • Click the Refresh icon to get the latest geo-location of the asset.

  • To edit the asset information, click the asset name, and click the down-arrow icon next to the asset name in the Asset Detail View. Then click Edit this Asset from the drop-down menu.

  • To create a geofence for your asset, see Setting up Geofences for details.

  • To unlink a GPS Tag from your asset, See Linking/Unlinking a GPS Tag to an Asset for details.

  • To delete a generic asset, see Deleting an Asset for details.
