OEE Customization Options for a Machine Tool

The Calculate OEE for this asset option enables you to decide whether an asset should be included in the calculation of OEE metrics, including Availability, Performance, and Quality.

Note

This option is only available to assets with PRO or PRO Trial subscriptions. For an asset with a Lite subscription, this option is invisible.

Tip

Configuring Availability

The Availability metric can be calculated for machine tools based on the selectable conditions listed:

  • Door is open

  • Spindle not turning

  • Program paused (i.e. M0/M1)

  • Speed override is less than 80%

  • Controller is in Manual Data Input (MDI)

These are notable situations operators usually meet in their daily work. SFx Asset Management makes these conditions optional in order to help you measure the operating time (Availability) of a machine tool more precisely with more flexibility.

By default, the Availability metric is calculated for a machine tool with these conditions included and displayed on the OEE pane. See the figure below.

  • Situation 1: When you checked the Calculate OEE for this asset option with all conditions selected (this is the default setting for a machine tool)

    Note

The default setting is applicable to newly provisioned machine tools after Release 5.2. For existing machine tools, you need to mark these checkboxes manually if needed.

It means the Availability metric will be calculated with these selected situations included, and displayed on the OEE pane.

For instance, even though the door state in a machine tool is open, or the program is paused, etc., during production, the time spans are still counted in the operating time and used to calculate the Availability.

  • Situation 2: When you checked the Calculate OEE for this asset option without any condition selected under the Availability tab

It means the Availability metric will be calculated with these conditions excluded and displayed on the OEE pane.

For example, the time spans are not considered as the operating time but instead regarded as the idle time when the door is actually open, or the spindle is not turning, etc., in a machine tool during production, thus the Availability will usually be smaller than the value in Situation 1.

Configuring Performance

When you checked the Calculate OEE for this asset option, and the Display Performance option is also checked under the Performance tab, the Performance metric will be calculated based on the method applied to CMMs, and displayed on the OEE pane. See OEE Performance for more information.

Configuring Quality

For a machine tool, Quality = Acceptable jobs / Total jobs done.

  • Situation 1: When you checked the Calculate OEE for this asset option, and the Display Quality option is also checked under the Quality tab

The Quality metric will be calculated based on the method applied to CMMs, and displayed on the OEE pane. See OEE - Quality for details.

  • Situation 2: When you checked the Calculate OEE for this asset option, and the two options under the Quality tab are both checked

The Quality metric will be calculated according to the Job Acceptance Rate entered by an operator, and displayed on the OEE pane.
