Setting up Geofences
On an embedded real-time map, you can define and activate a geofence, which will generate a virtual boundary around the targeted plant or facility where your portable asset would be located to visualize its active region. When all is set up, you can receive geofence events and instant email notifications once your asset left or entered the specified area.
Note
To use the geofence related functionality, you must purchase a GPS Tag and link it to your portable asset. See Linking/Unlinking a GPS Tag for details.
SFx Asset Management provides a circular type of geofence to visualize your specified area.
The subsection below covers the following topics:
To add a created geofence to your asset, follow these steps.
Log into the SFx Asset Management Portal: https://login.hexagonsfx.com/Account/Login.
Go to the Asset Dashboard and select the laser tracker you want to trace.
Click on the drop-down menu next to the tracker name, then select and click on the GPS item.
Scroll down to go to the GeoFences section, and click the link Add GeoFence to add a geofence for the laser tracker.
Tip
You can also click the GeoFences tab to quickly go down to the GeoFences section.
Select a geofence from the drop-down list, and click Save.
The geofence is added and applied to the current laser tracker.
In the drop-down list, these are organization-level geofences created by Asset Administrators. With a Standard User account, you can select one from the list and directly apply it to the current laser tracker.
Tip
To disable an organizational geofence, toggle off the switch. You'll not receive any related geofence events about this asset.
To delete an organizational geofence that is applied to the asset, click the Delete icon. In this case, only the record of the organizational geofence has been deleted from the GeoFences list. The original organization-level geofence still exists and can be managed by Asset Administrators. See Managing Geofences for details.
To create a new geofence for an asset, do as follows.
Log into the SFx Asset Management Portal: https://login.hexagonsfx.com/Account/Login.
Go to the Asset Dashboard and select the laser tracker you want to trace.
Click on the drop-down menu next to the tracker name, then select and click on the GPS item.
In the GPS screen, click the GeoFences tab to quickly go down to the GeoFences section.
Click the link Add GeoFence.
In the expanded drop-down list, scroll down and click on the + Create a New GeoFence item.
In the pop-up dialog, type in a geofence name, set up the radius of the geofence, and re-locate the geofence as you need. The circular type of geofence is chosen by default.
Tip
The radius range you can set up for a circular geofence is 0.01 – 500 kilometers.
Tip
To re-locate the location of a geofence, move your mouse on the map and click the desired position, which will be automatically identified and shown on the right with the new geo-location and accurate longitude and latitude values.
Click Apply to the Asset.
Note
At this step, with a Standard User account, there is only one option Save GeoFence available. Click it to save the newly created geofence as an asset-level geofence.
Note
With an Asset Administrator account, you can see two options by clicking on the up arrow icon next to the default Apply to the Asset option.
Apply to the Asset: Creates an asset-level geofence and applies it to the current asset.
Apply to My Organization: Saves the geofence as an organization-level geofence, and applies it to the current asset.
When you click on the Apply to My Organization option and save the geofence, you can then go to the Asset Settings page to manage the organization-level geofence (for Asset Administrator only).
Then click Save.
Note
You should save the currently edited geofence first before adding a new geofence or you’ll lose the geofence data you have edited.
Tip
An active geofence would be highlighted with a pale blue background while an inactive geofence would be greyed out to distinguish them clearly.
To add another geofence to track the transportation of your asset, repeat the steps described above.
Tip
To zoom in or zoom out the map, you can scroll forward or backward your mouse wheel to adjust the zoom level or double-click on the map to zoom in. Alternatively, you can use the
icon in the toolbar at the bottom right corner.
To pan over the map, hold the left mouse button pressed and move the map as you need.
The newly added geofence is activated by default so that you can get notified by geofence events once per hour when your tracker left or entered the pre-defined geofence. Geofence events would be sent on the hour if movement changes have been detected. You can also toggle off this option if you want to disable a geofence and related geofence event alerts.

Here are two examples of geofence events:

Similarly, perform the first three steps described above to enter the GPS screen.

To close the detail interface, click the Cancel button or click the geofence name again.
You can also edit or delete this geofence by clicking the Edit or Delete icon at the upper right of the inside dialog.

However, with an Asset Administrator account, you can go to the Asset Settings page to edit the organizational geofences if needed.

Click Save.
